Official Code of West Virginia, 1931

A Digital Archival Edition

The Code of West Virginia, 1931, the State's foundational recodification of its statutory law, enacted December 31, 1930 and effective January 1, 1931, has been preserved in a complete, structured digital edition by the staff of the Legislature.

This is a historical archival project: a faithful digitization of the original 1931 Code as it was enacted, prepared as a durable digital reference to the State's foundational 1931 statutory text. It is drawn directly from the official printed volume and rendered into a fully searchable format.

The Source

The work is digitized from the Official Code of West Virginia, 1931 book - a single bound volume of 1,962 pages, of which 1,539 pages carry the statutory text itself. Every section was digitized from that printed source, then verified against it.

The Archive

The completed digital edition preserves the full structure of the 1931 Code:

Each section is captured as structured data - its text, its citations, and its place in the chapter-article-section hierarchy - rather than as a flat page image. Non-textual material from the original, including tables and figures, is preserved in place. The text has been checked character by character against the source to keep the typographic detail of the original edition intact.

A note on currency

This is a historical edition of the 1931 Code as originally enacted - a reference to the State's statutory law as it stood at that time, not a statement of the current law of West Virginia. For the current Code of West Virginia, please see the official source linked below.

This edition is maintained by legislative staff as an ongoing initiative begun in 2026.
